Adding Endpoint Devices

An endpoint is any phone or app that makes and takes calls on your system — a desk handset, a cordless base, an analog adapter for a fax machine, or a softphone. Here's how to get one connected and turned into a working extension.

The onboarding flow

  1. Plug the phone into the network (ideally the voice VLAN). It gets an address from DHCP and learns where the PBX is.
  2. The phone requests its configuration by MAC address. VoicerOnePBX sees a new device.
  3. You approve it (or, if zero-touch is on, it's approved automatically) and it's bound to an extension.
  4. The phone re-requests, receives its real config with the account details, and registers — it now shows online and can make calls.
Approve vs. zero-touch

With zero-touch off (the default), a new phone appears in a Pending Approval banner on the Device Provisioning screen. Click to assign it the next free extension. With zero-touch on, the phone is given the next free even-numbered extension automatically.

Adding a device manually

Open Handsets → Device Provisioning → Add Device. Pick the pending phone (or enter its MAC), choose the extension number and display name, and set the vendor/model. Save, and VoicerOnePBX generates the config the phone will pull.

Softphones & the browser client

A softphone is a phone in software. Any standards-based SIP softphone can register as an extension using the extension number and its password. VoicerOnePBX also includes a built-in browser softphone (built on WebRTC) — no install at all; see Browser Access.

Vendor quick notes

  • Yealink / Polycom / Grandstream — pull config over HTTP from port 8080. Set DHCP Option 66 to http://<pbx-ip>:8080.
  • Cisco 79xx — pull over TFTP; need Options 66/150 pointed at the PBX and a licensed SIP firmware load. See Provisioning Profiles.
  • Grandstream HT ATA — an analog adapter that lets a traditional phone or fax machine plug into your IP system. Great for a paper fax; see Fax Center.
Not registering?

Check the phone is on the right network, that Option 66 points at the PBX, and that SIP port 5060 is open. The extension list shows each phone's live registration status.
